Typical System Layout

Composite deck floors, also known as composite slabs, provide an efficient, economical, and high-performance flooring solution for a wide range of buildings. The system consists of profiled steel decking, in-situ concrete, and mesh reinforcement. During construction, the steel decking acts as permanent formwork for the concrete. Once the concrete hardens, the decking and concrete work together compositely to form a strong, stiff, and long-span floor system. In most applications, temporary propping is not required, allowing faster and safer construction.

Load Capacity

Composite deck floors offer excellent load-carrying capacity due to the shear bond developed between the embossed steel decking and the concrete slab. Load capacities of up to 15 kN/m² can be achieved and can be further increased by providing additional reinforcement. Light mesh reinforcement is generally used to achieve fire resistance, while additional reinforcement can be introduced for crack control, especially in exposed floor applications.

Fire Resistance

Composite slabs provide outstanding fire resistance, achieving up to 120 minutes with the simple provision of mesh reinforcement. The actual fire rating depends on factors such as slab depth, deck profile, reinforcement size, and the type of concrete used (normal or lightweight). Higher fire resistance levels can be achieved by placing additional reinforcement bars within the deck ribs.

Acoustic Performance

With standard floor finishes, composite slabs deliver adequate acoustic performance for office and commercial environments. For projects requiring enhanced acoustic insulation—such as residential apartments, hotels, or hospitals—additional insulation solutions can be incorporated. The use of resilient layers or concrete screeds enables the floor system to comfortably meet building regulation requirements, achieving sound reduction values of up to 62 dB (airborne) and 50 dB (impact).

Durability

Steel decking is typically supplied with a G275 galvanized coating, offering reliable durability for indoor and moderately exposed environments. The coating remains intact during the forming process and ensures long-term performance. For enhanced corrosion resistance, we also offer ZAM steel (manufactured by Nissan Steel, Japan), which provides 3 to 4 times longer service life compared to conventional galvanized coatings. In highly exposed or damp conditions, additional corrosion protection measures are recommended, or the decking may be used as permanent formwork only.
